Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) is a major branch of ancient Chinese metaphysics, which reveals how people are affected by their interior and exterior environment. It has also been viewed as a natural earth science.
In the Western world, there has been a sharp increase in the awareness of feng shui. But even though the concept has become popular, the mechanics of how it really works and the theories behind it still remain a mystery to most, even those who dabble in it.
Common sense, laws of physics, and good interior design have always been incorporated into the beliefs and practices of feng shui. Historically, it was not taught openly to the public. Since feng shui could change the fortunes and powers of political dynasties, strict controls were in place to keep the average person from obtaining this knowledge.
Currently, the trendy “dumbed down” versions of feng shui have emphasized superstitious rituals and cultural placebos. But behind the myths and magic, a sophisticated universal earth science exists which can potentially benefit every human being anywhere in the world.
Professionals in architecture, design, and construction hold a unique position and power to choose good feng shui designs over bad ones. The ramifications are staggering if these industries come to understand how much they can affect the quality of life for those who will eventually occupy the spaces they design. To consciously create structures that will help people flourish in their careers, relationships, and health is a very big responsibility, but relatively easy when employed at the very beginning of a project.
Above and beyond any skepticism, it behooves professionals to familiarize themselves with basic theory and utilize it whenever possible. Architect Raymond Chang spoke before the American Feng Shui Institute in 1999, stating that an ever-increasing percentage of Asian home-buyers in Southern California won’t buy properties which fail to meet certain feng shui criteria. Health-conscious and open-minded Westerners are also embracing these principles and making it a contingency in their real estate transactions. It is in every architect and builder’s best interests to align themselves with an expert who can work side by side with them on a project.
Fortunately, one of the beauties of feng shui is that major problems can often be corrected after the fact, but the ultimate is to avoid these potential problems from the beginning.
