The Sui Po Direction changes from year to year and it is always a direction which opposes the direction known as the Tai Sui direction for the year. For example, in 2011, the Year of the Rabbit was associated with east. And the direction that opposes east is west. That means that in 2011, the Sui Po direction was west, the Rooster sector.

What does this mean in relation to Feng Shui? It means that the Rooster direction of west in 2011 was a very accident-prone direction. The whole range of west is from 247.5 to 292.5 degrees. The middle section of that is the Rooster Sector from 262.5-277.5 degrees. Some people feel that the entire sector of west is the Sui Po for the year, while others feel that just the Rooster sector is potentially dangerous.

It means that remodeling that sector of your house could invite problems, delays or accidents. The way you figure out where these directions are on your property necessitates that you have a to-scale floor plan and know how to use a compass, with all the directions relative to the center of your house.

It means that digging or disturbing the Sui Po Sector of your property outside can also invite mishaps. A conscientious Feng Shui practitioner will also alert a client to be on the look-out for what their neighbors might be doing in the way of constructions or demolitions too.

The Sui Po direction is easy to track from year to year. It simply shifts 30 degrees each year. In 2012, the Dragon Year, we know that the Dog opposes the Dragon, so the Dog sector of Northwest was the Sui Po for 2012. When you know it is going to rain you can bring an umbrella. And when you know when these accident-prone directions will be especially irritated, you can avoid a renovation. This is typical in Xuan Kong Flying Star Feng Shui, where we factor in both timing and direction to arrive at circumstances that we either want to remedy or capitalize on.

The Sui Po direction may be particularly harsh if someone attempts to build or renovate a house that “sits” in the Sui Po direction for the year, as this is like getting started on a project during a negative time frame. The sitting side of the house is the back side. In a general sense, a house which is backed up to the Sui Po direction could be a problem house to build or remodel. It might even be harder to sell a house in its Sui Po year if there are other compounding influences as well.

Each person has a kind of “personal Sui Po” direction too. And the formula is simple. The Chinese zodiac sign which opposes your own will always be an opposition sign. These zodiac signs represent BOTH time frames AND directions. For example, a person born in 1966 is born in the Year of the Horse, which is always associated with South. The Opposition or Sui Po direction is North, the Rat sector. For a Horse person to sleep with their head to North can oppose them or drain them. And for a Horse Person, the Rat year will be an Opposition year for them where they can anticipate more struggles.

The Sui Po direction is part of a whole body of knowledge called “Construction Sha” that you can learn about in classical Feng Shui studies.
