There are many variables to consider, such as a person’s overall training, ability to communicate with others and transmit the knowledge, the local economy, and how a person markets their services. Feng Shui is like any other business in that regard. Someone studying Interior Design or Professional Organizing or Astrology could have the same reservations.
I personally have been able to make a great living as a consultant, beginning part-time in 1992 and building into a full-time practice by 1996. I have far exceeded my own initial expectations. For others, Feng Shui has become a part-time career which complements other related fields.
