Many people are familiar with the terms “yin” and “yang” and the Yin-Yang symbol from Chinese metaphysics, also known as the Tai Qi symbol. These yin and yang attributes can be used to categorize countless comparative studies or observations in life.  A doctor of Orientation Medicine will determine yin and yang aspects to a person’s constitutional health, for example. There are also yin and yang hours in a day and times of the year.

Specific to Feng Shui, there are many associations and references to yin and yang, including determining what is simply the front (yang) versus the back (yin) sides of a house.  We can also categorize individual rooms based on Yin-Yang Theory.

Initially, we can describe a room as yin if it has yin attributes like being dark or small or cool in temperature.  Comparatively, a yang room will be more bright, larger and warmer in temperature. There are other indicators of what makes a room feel yin or yang and much of the time this is palpable or even visually obvious.   Rooms with high or low ceilings, empty or cluttered could also take on yin or yang attributes.

In formal studies, the distinction of a yin or yang room also comes down to its function.  What kinds of activities take place in the room?  Generally speaking, sleeping rooms are referred to as yin.  They are, for the most part, still and quiet when sleeping is the activity.  A meditation room could also be seen as a yin room.  In contrast, wakeful rooms and entrances are more on the yang side, for both homes and certainly for businesses.

The reason we classify a room as yin or yang is because this distinction will also help determine the ideal or correct approach in balancing the energies of that room.  No room is just holding a singular type of energy, rather a mixture of energies.  And we want to cater to the yin energies more for a yin room and the yang energies more for a yang room.  We will also be predictably influenced more by the yin energies in a yin room and the yang energies in a yang room.  This is where Feng Shui can get technical and requires training to understand and the ability to execute.  This is also a level of understanding that even people who consider themselves professional consultants do not always get the opportunity to learn about.

In the Flying Star School, we can determine the yin and yang flying stars in each area of a house or building based on its construction Period and compass orientation.  If a bedroom has really good energies for yang activities and not for sleeping, then that room might be better off as a home office than as a sleeping room.

One entrance to a house may have better yang energy than yin and that could be the tie breaker in terms of which entrance to use the most. This kind of information becomes very practical and valuable as people decide exactly how to use their space, whether or not to even buy or lease a space, and the ideal arrangements in designing a space.  We want the function of the room to match the inherently optimal energies of the room.

For those reading this with a background in Xuan Kong Flying Stars, we could compare the 8-x-5 combination with the 5-x-8 combination.  In Period 8, the 8 star reigned supreme as the best type of energy, a wealth or health star. When it is a mountain star, this was the best to sleep in.  When it is a water star, it was the best to work in or have as an entrance.  As well, there are adjustments which can be made to enhance these flying stars even further. In Period 9, (2024-2044), we can consider the 9 Mountain Star as a Yin star and the 9 Water Star as a Yang Star.
