I have a client who I instructed not to use fire colors in her bedroom when we did her initial consultation.  Why would she be tempted to use this color, when advised not to?  The answer is because there is a lot of generic information floating around the internet and in books, which states that red is the color of passion and romance.

I do understand how people don’t want to feel like they are missing out on something great, like the superstitious money bags chain email that circulates the globe every now and then. But this is not the way Feng Shui is supposed to be practiced.  You are entitled to very specific information about your home or work space and you should not have to rely on generic advice that could cause harm or is irrelevant to your needs.  In the case of my client, if she were to add red color on a large scale in her room, it would act as the fire element and not interact well with the flying star 6-2 combination in her bedroom.   These numbers are just short hand for an energy field that was created in her bedroom when the apartment building was built.

The details of this true story is that she placed a maroon comforter on her bed and within 3 weeks her engagement was called off.  When she called me and asked for help, she divulged that she had purchased a fiery color comforter for her bed.  She removed it upon my recommendation and within a short period of time, the engagement was back on.

Xuan Kong Flying Star practitioners know that this combination can cause problems with the head or respiratory tract, as well as sickness or bleeding or depression.  Author Note: Starting in Period 9 (2024), the 2 star can have a more all-round positive influence. Adding the fire element here would not evoke love and romance for the person sleeping in that kind of energy field. I was advising this client in Period 7. It would do the exact opposite and possibly trigger separation and loneliness, if not sickness.  And yet, there are generic and New Age versions of Feng Shui which treat every house the same, not taking into consideration the year built, the directional alignment, the yearly influence or the unique floor plan.

As a long time practitioner I do know where most of the myths and superstitions come from.  Adding red color to an imaginary romance area is a popular but misguided notion about how this natural science works.  As well, just in Western color psychology, the color red can stir passions and people often have an extreme like or dislike for that color.  All subjective reactions aside, a large display of red color in a fabric, flooring, wall color or art work will resonate with some heat and is interpreted as the fire element.  Having a high intensity light can work as fire also.  But one must be careful where they place it.

For example, in 2013, placing the fire element in the direction of west, could have irritated the annual 7 metal star and trigger problems related to the mouth, teeth or breasts.  Adding fire to the northwest in 2013 could have put pressure on the head or lungs or the man in the house.  Adding fire to the southwest in 2013 could have triggered loneliness and sickness.  These are just a couple of examples of but one layer to consider in a proper analysis.

Can fire be placed somewhere for a positive result? Sure!  For example, in 2013 placing fire color in the east could have helped reduce arguments or legal problems.  In the Northeast in 2013, fire could have also helped boost financial luck.  And yet, these are not recommendations that I would make to any client without doing a thorough analysis of how the annual influences stack up compared to the permanent energies of those same directional zones.

As well, in order to know where these directional areas are really located, you need to be working with a to-scale floor plan and also use an accurate compass.  In Feng Shui we refer to magnetic North, not True North.  Magnetic North can be quite different from one place to the next throughout the world.  For example, in Southern California, magnetic North is currently about 12 degrees east of True North.  In New York, magnetic North is currently about 12 degrees west of True North. If you choose to work with a compass App, you absolutely must make sure it is calibrated to determine the magnetic declination of the area.

For a proper and comprehensive Feng Shui analysis, many things are taken into consideration and you are entitled to have a personalized evaluation, not a generic or New Age version of one.
