Of all the Case Studies I have written, this one on Feng Shui and Mental Illness is certainly one of the more unique ones. It was inspired by my own case study research and dealing with a small percentage of my client base who suffer from mild to significant mood or psychiatric disorders.
Even before I studied Nine Star Ki, I sensed there was an expanded pallet of interpretations for the flying stars. And very early on in my feng shui practice, I noticed modern day applications and adaptations for virtually all feng shui theories.
I created this Case Study for the benefit of the serious practitioner so that they could be tuned in to a very important part of life’s struggles, reflected in a Feng Shui analysis–at a time when there seems to be an epidemic of mental illness. At the very least, it is being recognized and diagnosed more than in the past.
The case study delves into aspects of Yin-Yang extremes, as well as the infamous Out of Trigram Chart type. I also discuss special house types and then a run down of the flying star combinations from the angle of psychiatric imbalances, such as two combinations listed below.
Excerpt:
“2-6 or 6-2 combination:
This energy can make a person very lonely. And when we break it down even further, the 6 star is related to the head, so there could be problems with the head or more specifically the brain or mind. As well, I wrote in The Feng Shui Matrix that when the 2-6 or 6-2 stars are the center stars of a house, the occupants might fall victim to a spiritual teacher or guru that is a charlatan.
The people most vulnerable to joining cults and rigid religions are often people who come from troubled upbringings. There is a co-dependency between the cult members and the cult leader. People who allow themselves to be deceived and taken advantage of by a cult leader may be looking for outside answers to their inner turmoil.
I can use myself as an example in this instance because I had a fairly unhappy childhood with a weak father. I was very attracted to a strong, authoritative spiritual teacher who turned out to be a womanizer and a charlatan. He never took advantage of me in an overt way, but he did ruin the lives of many people I knew. He sucked them dry emotionally and financially.
At the time, I lived in a neighborhood where most of the houses had the same or similar flying star chart. How does that happen? (It happens when all the houses face the same direction and were built in the same time frame). It was not a coincidence that two major cults settled into this neighborhood and made their headquarters in this particular area.
2-7 or 7-2 combination:
The 7 star is related to deception or betrayal. I wish I could remember every client I questioned about whether or not they thought they were being betrayed or deceived. Of course, sometimes it is really happening. One memorable client discovered when her boyfriend went out of town for an extended period that he was paying his share of the rent with withdrawals from her stock portfolio. That was for real.
But now I know that a few clients who were concerned about people in their lives doing them harm could have easily been paranoid. I have had several clients over the years who were convinced that someone had put a hex on them, a curse, or that others in their work pool were out to get them, trying to get them fired. I took them at their word, but they could never corroborate any evidence this was happening.
The 7 star is also associated with stealing, which is sometimes a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as much as it could be sociopathic behavior. One client confided in me that her room-mate was essentially “stealing from the government” by cashing unemployment checks while working. A sociopath is not necessarily a violent person. They could be someone who feels “above the law” and someone who doesn’t have good boundaries. This is also a central character trait of the narcissist, that they can bend the rules whenever it suits them.”
This case study also touches on related issues, such as risk-taking, isolation, and substance abuse.
