From, the Yi Jing, the Qian trigram holds the image of the Heavens. It is depicted as three solid lines stacked on top of each other and this represents all male energy. It can be the father figure or an older man, over sixty years of age.

As a personal trigram, assigned to people born in certain years, the Qian trigam is associated with the head and lung region. These are vulnerable areas for the Qian person and would be exacerbated if the house they live in can also ignite upper body problems. For example, the Qian trigram is related to the direction of Northwest. It happens to be the most peaceful direction for a Qian person. If there was something broken down or in ill repair in the northwest section of a house, that could signal problems for the occupants with the head or lung areas.

Qian, representative of Hard Metal, can also be written in the Wade-Giles transliteration of Chien. As well, another term for a personal trigram is a “ming gua.”

Those born on or after February 4th in 1949, 1958, 1967, 1976, 1985, 1994 and every nine years perpetually are the Qian trigram. Women who are Qian can be strong, leader types as much as the men born in those years. Within the classical Feng Shui community, the vast majority of practitioners will make a distinction between a female “gua” and a male “gua” born in the same year.

This system was set into place by one of the most famous Feng Shui masters, monk Yi Xing, in the 8th century. The years I have listed above would be considered only the male Qian years according to people who adhere strictly to the Ba Zhai (Eight Mansion) School. However, there is growing concern that this deviation in creating a different female gua for the same years as males was an intentional corruption of the method, for political reasons. We just don’t know for sure if Yi Xing was cooperating with the Tang Dynasty Emperor or if Yi Xing discovered something valid and had the last laugh surreptitiously.

A major wealth direction for the Qian person is West, according to the Ba Zhai School. Each individual has their own personal magnetism which can attract or repel wealth luck. Another wealth-attracting direction for Qian people is Northeast. It can also bring friends and benefactors with it.

Using a compass to determine all directions and their boundaries, these directions can then be properly identified with a to-scale floor plan. Magnetic North is the reference point in all Xuan Kong calculations and this can vary slightly- to- significantly around the globe. For example, presently in Los Angeles magnetic North is about 12 degrees east of True North, but in New York magnetic North is 12 degrees west of True North. These declinations change very slowly over time.

For a Qian trigram person, they can extract from the direction of southwest energy which makes them appear more trustworthy and likable. One would hope that the person would really in fact be more trustworthy and not just appear that way.

In the Ba Zhai, Eight House Type and Eight Personal Trigram system, each person has four auspicious directions and four inauspicious directions. For the Qian person, I have identified West and Northeast as being prosperity directions, southwest as a “good will” kind of energy and northwest being very relaxing.

I consciously do not focus on the four inauspicious directions for each personal trigram. The descriptions can be very negative and make people worry about things they cannot change. There are many layers to Feng Shui and personal best directions are just one of them.
