A Feng Shui master’s job is to help people, plain and simple. Many areas of life can be addressed in this type of analysis: how the home or work environment influences its occupants. And even though we hear many stories about how a Feng Shui master helped someone triple their income or some other great leap in their career, it brings us as much joy to see the results of our recommendations improve a person’s physical health, mental health and social life.
“To Be Rich in Friends is to Be Poor in Nothing” is a quote by Lilian Whiting. I remember watching one of those late-night News magazine shows where they did a study on the most depressed people in the world. The United States ranked the highest. This News feature intended to point out that in a part of the world with the highest economic wealth, we have the most depressed individuals, underscoring that money does not buy happiness. People in some of the poorest countries are the happiest because of their strong connections to family and friends.
A similar and very popular saying is “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.”And in this same way, we prioritize in Chinese metaphysics, knowing that health and well-being are priceless. In a more technical realm of theory and application, we have four major house types in a classical Xuan Kong Feng Shui analysis. One is described as “good for people and good for money.” Obviously, this house sounds like the best and ideal house to live in.
The next best house is one which is still regarded as “good for people/not so good for money luck.” We call it a Double Sitting House type. The third house type is regarded as “good for money, but not as good for people.” This “Double Facing” house might be one in which the people do well financially, but their health and relationships may suffer. And when it comes to relationships, we do mean both inside the house amongst family members, as well as outside amongst friends and co-workers.
The fourth house type is commonly called “Reversed.” This is because it is the reverse of the ideal house type. The Reversed House can be undermining for both relationships and careers.
These house types are not identified by any visual cues. They are determined based on astrological and astronomical influences factored into the orientation of the structure as well as the timing of when it was built. Albert Einstein once said that “Space is not empty space, but a tightly woven fabric of time and space” and this is a basic Feng Shui principle which defines the qi (energy currents) inside any and all structures.
The good news is that all of these house types can be enhanced. So even the houses that are generally not as supportive for the health and wealth of the occupants can apply counter measures and adjustments to bolster their energy. Many people are not aware that houses have distinct “personalities” and some are better than others in helping occupants garner more friends and positive relationships. And even though Feng Shui is an ancient practice, documented formally for more than 3,000 years, the applications could not be more relevant in modern times. Recent studies have revealed that most Americans have only one person in their life that they can call a friend.
Many of us lead very solitary lives, and our virtual lives on the Internet don’t necessarily encourage more real life friendships. Another aspect to a Feng Shui analysis takes note of personal best directions, some of which can help people garner more friends. Other directions can enhance our likability and trustworthiness. My second book, The Feng Shui Matrix, focuses on what is good for the individual, which is different for each person, including garnering friendships and likeability.
Each person, based on their year of birth, can access certain favored directions for sleeping and for work station positions to help them attract and retain more friends. Going even deeper into any evaluation, we can discover areas of a floor plan which can trigger arguments, loneliness, gossip, deception and other influences which can undermine good, solid friendships.
Another surprising study which I recall reading about in the Los Angeles Times is that your neighbor who lives across the street from you may easily have more in common with you than some of the people you consider your friends. From a Feng Shui perspective, some of this might even have to do with the likelihood that the Feng Shui influences are quite similar in the same neighborhood, same construction cycles, same orientations and similar floor plans.
This is something to think about in a day and Age when many people do not speak to their neighbors or even know their names. It might be time to walk across the street and introduce yourself to your neighbor. In an emergency like an earthquake or fire, it might just be your neighbor who saves your life!
